A. Overview and Herd Size

Attachments 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e, 2f, 2g, 2h, 2i2j, 2k , 2l, 2m, 2n, 2o, 2p, 2q, 2r, 2s and 2t provide data on the farms supplying the New England milkshed, or those comprising the price regulation’s “pool”, including the numbers of farms, their size, their production, and changes over time.  Attachment 2a describes the basic distribution of farms in the milkshed by state. In summary, the New England and New York farms subject to the Compact price regulation and comprising the New England milkshed remain, on balance, small family farm operations. Almost three-quarters of these farms have fewer than 100 cows in their herds. Over 90 percent of the farms have fewer than 200 cows; of the remaining 8 percent, or about 400 farms, only about 80 farms, or about 2 percent of the total, have more than 400 cows. (Attachments 2b  and 2c).

The data do not indicate that herd sizes per farm increased during the period. The

distribution of milkshed farms by herd size appears to have remained fairly stable, and

does not show any clear trend of expansion.  (Attachments 2b and 2c).
